Family members gather at the funeral of slain e-hailing driver Mthokozisi Mvelase in Ulundi, KwaZulu-Natal

The family of Mthokozisi Mvelase, a 27-year-old e-hailing driver brutally murdered in Soweto, has expressed deep disappointment with South Africa's justice system as they laid their son to rest in Ulundi, KwaZulu-Natal on Saturday.

Ongoing Violence in Transport Sector Claims Another Life

The tragic incident, which occurred outside Maponya Mall last month, appears to be linked to escalating tensions between e-hailing services and traditional taxi operators. Four unidentified assailants approached Mvelase's vehicle at the mall entrance, opened fire, and subsequently set his car ablaze with him inside.

Family Demands Justice Amid Systemic Failures

The Mvelase family's plea for justice comes at a time when KwaZulu-Natal's justice system faces serious scrutiny over corruption and inefficiency. Before the burial, the family performed traditional rituals, highlighting the deep cultural impact of this tragedy on the community.

Economic Justice and Worker Safety Concerns

This incident underscores the broader issues of economic justice and systemic inequality affecting young Black workers in South Africa's informal transport sector. E-hailing drivers, many of whom are young graduates seeking employment in a challenging economy, continue to face violence and intimidation.

The authorities must step in and ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice. Our son's death cannot be in vain,

Call for Urgent Reform

The murder has sparked renewed calls for comprehensive reform in the transport sector and stronger protection measures for e-hailing drivers. As tensions continue to mount, stakeholders demand immediate intervention from law enforcement and transport authorities to prevent further bloodshed.
