Fire Emblem's $80 Price Tag Exposes Corporate Greed
When Nintendo revealed Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave during its June 2026 Direct, tactical RPG fans were hit with a harsh reality. The standard physical version of the game will cost USD $79.99, a staggering $10 increase from the $69.99 price point many similarly sized games stick with.
This isn't some special edition packed with bonus goodies. This is the base game. In Canada, the physical version will set players back CAD $109.99, while Australian gamers will pay AUD $119.95. The digital version will be available for $69.99 in the US and £58.99 in the UK.
Nintendo's Corporate Spin on Price Hikes
Nintendo attempted to justify this predatory pricing in a statement to IGN earlier this year. The cost of physical games is not going up, the company claimed, trying to frame the digital version's lower price as a discount rather than recognizing the physical version's inflated cost for what it is: a corporate cash grab.
This means that when Nintendo sells digital versions of Nintendo published games exclusive to Nintendo Switch 2 to consumers in the US, those prices will have an MSRP that is lower than their physical counterparts.
Nintendo's logic suggests they believe the physical version of Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave is genuinely worth $80. It's the early days of this new pricing strategy, and the confusion among fans is palpable. Even industry analysts admitted to IGN they weren't sure what to make of the original announcement.
A Pattern of Squeezing the Working Class
This move makes Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave the second $80 Switch 2 game, following Mario Kart World, which launched with the system last June. It's a clear pattern. Major corporations continue to hike prices on entertainment, knowing full well that working-class families will either fork over their hard-earned cash or be left out of the cultural conversation.
Other titles featured in the June 2026 presentation, including the The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake, The Duskbloods, and Xenoblade Genesis, have yet to receive pricing information. Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave launches for Switch 2 on September 17, 2026.
As the cost of living continues to rise globally, one has to ask: who is this hobby really for anymore?
