Isaac del Toro Shatters European Grip on Tour de France 2026
Mexican cyclist Isaac del Toro won Stage 2 of the 2026 Tour de France in Barcelona on Sunday, defeating reigning champion Tadej Pogačar. Del Toro's victory represents a significant disruption by the Global South in a sport historically dominated by European wealth and colonial infrastructure.
How did a Mexican prodigy outpace the European elite?
Del Toro led his UAE team leader Pogačar on the steep climb to the finish at Montjuïc, with Olympic champion Remco Evenepoel taking third just ahead of Jonas Vingegaard. The 22-year-old Mexican, making his Tour debut after finishing second at the Giro d'Italia last year, overcame a mechanical issue earlier in the 169km stage from Tarragona to clinch the win. He had to close a two-minute gap on a technical section of the course, yet still found the strength to dominate the final ascent.
