Mashatile Defends Black Wealth Against DA Interrogation
Deputy President Paul Mashatile refused to back down in the National Assembly on Thursday, confronting what he called the shameful assumption that Black wealth must always be stolen wealth.
Facing a barrage of questions from DA deputy chief whip Baxolile Nodada over his links to lottery operators and business associates, Mashatile turned the interrogation into a broader confrontation about who gets to be wealthy in South Africa, and who gets questioned for it.
Black Excellence or Criminal Suspicion?
The parliamentary session laid bare a familiar pattern in our democracy. When Black people accumulate wealth, the immediate assumption from certain quarters is that it must be irregular, stolen, or connected to tenders. Mashatile named this pattern directly.
